On Monday evening, Karl Lagerfeld debuted the 2013 Resort collection for Chanel to the world at the gardens of Versailles in France. What could be a better setting than Versailles, which was commissioned by Emperor Louis XIV in the 17th century, to debut a collection characterized by the fashions of the french nobility prior to the Revolution?
Film stars such as Tilda Swinton and Vanessa Paradis watched from the front row, as models wearing Chanel’s signature tweeds paired with ribbon bows, hoop skirts, and ruffles galore strutted through the fountain-filled gardens of Versailles. Lagerfeld created an air of “frivolity” with the collection by recreating the 18th century trends in denims, plastics, and chambray, even pairing a great deal of the looks with gold platform sneakers. With a collection so frivolous and fun, Lagerfeld hopes to take a turn away from the “chic minimalism” that has been a precedent at most runway shows in recent seasons.
However what I really feel brought the whole collection together was the impeccable pompadour-inspired hair and rosy-cheeked makeup that literally transformed models such as Cara Delevingne and Lindsey Wixon into members of Chanel’s court of couture, undoubtedly ruled by King Lagerfeld.
The hairstylist, Sam Mcknight, dyed “bob” wigs in varying colors from green to purple pastels and fit them over the models’ long ponytails that were tied in large bows. Mcknight described his creation to Vogue.com as “a techno nod to Marie Antoinette”. The looks were finished off with some dramatic pink eyeshadow, rosy cheeks, and one beauty mark under the right eye, which under closer examination reveals itself to be the Chanel emblem…brilliant!
